Many senior roles are filled through search firms and personal networks before they are ever advertised. If you want to be on those shortlists, it helps to understand how search actually works, and what makes a consultant pick up the phone to you first.
How executive search works
The client pays
A search firm works for the employer. Its job is to find the best person for the brief, not a role for every candidate.
A tight brief
Consultants look for a close match to the scorecard: scale, sector, outcomes and leadership style.
A short list
Most searches present a handful of candidates. Being memorable and credible matters.
How to be found
- Be clear about what you are known for. “Transformation leader” is vague. “Rescues large ServiceNow programmes in regulated sectors” is memorable.
- Keep your LinkedIn and CV consistent. Titles, dates and results should match.
- Reply, even when you are not looking. A two-line response keeps you on the consultant’s radar for the next role.
- Be visible in your field. Speaking, writing and recommendations all build credibility.
How to work well with a search partner
- 1Be honest about your package and notice period. Surprises late in the process damage trust on both sides.
- 2Share your real motivations. Scope, location, family and timing all shape the right fit.
- 3Tell them about other processes. It helps them move at the right speed.
- 4Protect your confidentiality. Ask that your CV is never sent anywhere without your consent.
- 5Give feedback after every interview. It helps the consultant represent you better.
The best search relationships are built before you need them, and kept honest when you do.
