Is Your Candidate Real? Protecting Senior Hiring From AI and Deepfake Fraud

The CV looks perfect. The video interview goes well. The references check out on paper. And the person who starts on Monday is not the person you interviewed. It sounds far-fetched, but candidate fraud is now one of the fastest-growing risks in hiring, and senior technology roles are a prime target.

Why senior roles are the target

Fraud is no longer about a junior candidate inflating a CV. The real prize is access. Architects, IT leaders and platform owners get keys to systems, data and budgets. That makes remote senior technology roles the most attractive target, and the most expensive mistake.

AI has made it easier. Candidates can generate a flawless CV in seconds, rehearse answers with a chatbot and, in the worst cases, use deepfake video to appear as someone else. Gartner’s research director Jamie Kohn put it simply: it is getting harder for employers to evaluate candidates’ true abilities, and in some cases, their identities.

Red flags to watch for

Video that does not feel right

Lips slightly out of sync, a frozen background or a camera that “cannot” be turned on.

Long pauses on unexpected questions

Scripted answers are smooth. Follow-up questions reveal the gaps.

Addresses that do not match

Equipment requested at an address that differs from the ID provided.

A history you cannot verify

Employers that cannot be reached, or referees who only ever reply by email.

How to protect your hiring process

  1. 1Hold at least one interview in person, or on live, unfiltered video with the camera on throughout.
  2. 2Use simple live checks. Ask the candidate to adjust their lighting, turn their head or read a sentence they have not seen.
  3. 3Speak to referees by phone, using numbers you found yourself, not the ones on the CV.
  4. 4Verify ID against the contract name and address, and ship equipment only to that address.
  5. 5Delay system access until background checks have fully cleared.
  6. 6Train everyone who interviews. Hiring managers are now part of your security team.

In senior hiring, trust is verified, never assumed. A real conversation with a real person is still the best fraud check there is.
