Finance Transformation Hiring: Define the Partnership Between Finance and Technology

A finance transformation brief can hide several different jobs. The organisation may need stronger financial control, a new reporting process, an ERP implementation or better planning information. Before beginning a search, decide which problem has priority and where the new leader’s authority will sit.

Describe the work in business terms

Identify the processes that need to improve. That could mean a more dependable close timetable, clearer ownership of management information or fewer manual handovers. Establish the current position so candidates can understand the scale of the task.

Distinguish between outcomes the incoming leader owns directly and changes that depend on other functions. If a reporting problem begins with operational data, the brief should explain how finance will work with the people responsible for that data.

Test the relationship with technology teams

Ask candidates to describe a disagreement with an IT or delivery colleague. What was the underlying issue? Which constraints mattered? How was the decision reached? Useful answers show an ability to work through detail without losing sight of the business purpose.

Discuss how requirements were translated into practical changes and checked by users. A candidate should be able to explain their own role without claiming every achievement of the wider programme.

Explore judgement under pressure

Present a short scenario: a programme milestone is approaching, but an important reconciliation remains unreliable. Ask what the candidate would investigate, who should be involved and how they would communicate the options.

The aim is to understand their reasoning. Do they distinguish facts from assumptions? Do they recognise when they need specialist input? Can they explain the consequences of proceeding or waiting?

Look beyond implementation

Ask how new processes became routine. Explore documentation, training, ownership and the work needed after launch. Request examples of measures used to determine whether the change made finance more effective.

Finally, make the partnership explicit in the offer and onboarding plan. The finance sponsor, technology leader and incoming hire should share a view of priorities, escalation routes and decision rights. That clarity gives the appointment a practical foundation.
