A cloud leadership appointment should start with the organisation’s needs. The challenge might be dependable service, a migration, clearer cost ownership or the ability to release changes safely. Each calls for a different emphasis in the search brief.
The AWS Cloud Adoption Framework groups capabilities into six perspectives: business, people, governance, platform, security and operations. These provide a useful starting point for an interview, even where the organisation uses a different provider or several platforms.
Business and people
Ask the candidate to explain a cloud decision to a non-technical executive. What business problem did it address, what alternatives were considered and how was success assessed? Look for a clear connection between investment and an operational need.
Then discuss the team. Which skills did the candidate build internally, where did they use partners and how did ownership change? Ask how they helped existing staff adapt. A credible plan should account for the people available, not assume a completely new team.
Governance and platform
Explore how priorities, costs and exceptions were managed. Who could approve a new service? Who understood its ongoing cost? How were teams helped to work within agreed standards?
For platform decisions, ask about the reasoning behind a specific design. Probe the constraints and trade-offs, rather than treating familiarity with a long list of products as proof of leadership.
Security and operations
Use a scenario relevant to the role, such as an important service interruption or an unexpected access issue. Ask what the leader would need to know, who would own the response and how business stakeholders would be kept informed. Technical detail should be assessed by an appropriately qualified interviewer.
Discuss what happened after a previous incident. Look for evidence that learning changed working practices, documentation or responsibilities.
Bring the evidence together
Agree the weighting of these areas before interviews. A role building a new platform may need a different balance from one leading a mature operational service. Record gaps as questions to resolve, rather than filling them with assumptions.
The strongest appointment is the person whose experience fits your actual environment and whose decisions you can understand well enough to evaluate.
